Everything has Rhythm (FOLI)
I love this video by Thomas Roebers and Floris Leeuwenberg. It is dedicated to the Baro people of Guinea, Africa and was filmed over one month spent there. On his YouTube page, Thomas Roebers posted this text with the video:
"Life has a rhythm, it's constantly moving. The word for rhythm ( used by the Malinke tribes ) is FOLI. It is a word that encompasses so much more than drumming, dancing or sound. It's found in every part of daily life. In this film you not only hear and feel rhythm but you see it. It's an extraordinary blend of image and sound that feeds the senses and reminds us all how essential it is."
All life has a rhythm. As mentioned in my last post, as soon as we have a heartbeat we have our own rhythm within ourselves--the rhythm of our heartbeat, the rhythm of the blood pumping through our veins, the rhythm of each breath that keeps us alive. This video gives us a visual of the rhythm of each movement around us. Sometimes our actions work in rhythm with those around us, and sometimes the rhythm is ours alone.
Notice in the video how each action creates a sound, and the sounds create a rhythm that creates a kind of music. We then see the creation of musical instruments, and the playing of musical instruments inspire dancing. Watch the childrens' faces as they dance--there is absolute joy pouring out of their beings!
Do you notice the everyday rhythms of your life? The sound of the crosswalk at a stoplight, the turn signal in your car, the hum of a fan, the bubbling of a brook or fountain, the rustling of the trees, the whir of the washing machine? Everything has a rhythm...
