Freedom
"Dance constitutes a true recapturing of... freedom and childish play" --Agnes De Mille
Our newest dance is to Freedom by Allen Stone, and I just love the feeling this song conjures up. We filmed the dance at the beautiful Sundance Mountain Resort in Provo, Utah, on a snowy but quiet weekday. If being high on the mountains in fresh snow isn't enough to make one delirious with simultaneous feelings of freedom AND companionship with all of nature, how about zooming through fresh powder on a snowboard or skis?! It's one of my favorite things.
We stopped to dance at various places on the mountain and were met with many reactions, most of which included smiles all around. People cheered me on, joined in (though most maintained a safe distance from the camera), or watched and smiled. You can see me trying to lure people in to join me in the video, but with only a little success. I'm still figuring out the best way to get more people to dance with me, both in person during our filming and online. What would help YOU to recapture some 'freedom and childish play' through dance more often?
Our goal is to inspire more random acts of dance in life, more smiles, more play, more freedom with your own body's movement. It reminds me of another song's lyrics, Already Gone, by The Eagles, "So often times it happens, that we live our lives in chains, and we never even know we have the key". Have you unknowingly put your 'moves' on lockdown? It just might be time to unburden yourself, shake off those chains, and celebrate freedom!
And if something besides dance makes you feel free, be sure to share it in the comments. We could all use a little inspiration to enjoy the freedom we have. And if you do film yourself dancing, don't forget to tag us (@firstwedance and #firstwedance) for a chance to be featured on our site!
